I just love Atlantic salmon fishing on the Gaspé Atlantic Salmon Fishing Summer 2015 peninsula. I've been doing it for over 25 years, and every year is a surprise. This past year was no different. I went with my good friend Jonas, son of the talented bamboo rod maker Marc Aroner.
These days, when it comes to products there's a lot of tough talk. This plastic case is built to withstand being stepped on. This -- ads will say -- well, this is built to withstand being driven over. Until the past few years, I had no idea so many fishing products were the victims of untimely vehicular deaths.
On one of my trips this summer, my friend Jared and I ran into huge bait balls -- truly, some of the largest I've ever seen. Here's some video from the day, over which we caught stripers, Albies, and blues. It was an awesome day!
I’ve got bugs in my jungle cock. In looking for some material to complete a salmon tube fly I was tying, I found what every fly tyer fears: the specs of chewed fibers, and the little husk of a body. The evidence was clear: bugs had gotten into my tying materials, and they had expensive taste.
This will be the year the Cheeky Schoolie Tournament threatened to go legit. Gone was the small sand parking lot, the salty local bar, and the rag tag group of fisherman. In its place, there was the runway expanse of the West Dennis Beach parking lot, cars with license plates from all over the place, and a very clean, upstanding restaurant.

There is a great selection of beautifully tied flies in the bins here at The Compleat Angler. These days, many of them are tied in countries all over the world. It is a sad testament that the commercial fly-tying industry here in the US has almost disappeared.
The Orvis Helios 2 -- a rod that has won so many awards that it hardly needs an introduction. I tried the H2 a few years ago in the 5 weight that so many people have reviewed, and so many have loved. But when I want a 5 wt, I fish the bamboo rod my dad made for me. (Spoiled, I know.)
A few years ago, I started looking for a new saltwater rod. Here in New England, I do a fair amount of salt water fishing. That means a lot of long nights, a lot of punching into the wind, and a lot of trying to huck a big fly a long ways with a backcast hampered by rock, estuary grass, or sand.

There's one guarantee in fishing: you're going to be near and, often, in the water. Even if you're not wading, conditions change quickly, bringing water from above as well as below. When I was a kid, my grandfather used to joke that there was one guarantee for our annual canoeing and fishing trip in Maine: It was going to rain. Hard.
There are times when the season aligns with a long weekend to provide the perfect weekend. This weekend was one such weekend. The days were bright, warm, and calm, followed by bracing, dark nights. The foliage was a stunning mosaic of reds, yellows, and stubborn greens.
